Many companies have gained fame — or infamy — from their employee rules and regulations, and guidelines range anywhere from blatantly unreasonable to flat-out ridiculous. Between enforced finger-pointing methods and banning words like "hopefully," these weird rules will make you wonder exactly what the heck CEOs were thinking when they codified these rulebooks.

Martha Stewart is generally known for "cozy" and homely interior decorating, though, ironically, her company forces employees to depersonalize their desks completely. Not even a family photo is welcome.

Apple Stores

When interacting with customers, Apple employees aren't allowed to use negative words like "crash," "bug," or even "problem." They're also forbidden from correcting or disagreeing with them and are told to simply explain the solution as fact using the phrase "turns out," as in "turns out this software is supported in this version."

Tesla / Space X

Elon Musk hates it when employees wear any scent at all. Be it perfume, cologne, or a strong deodorant fragrance, Musk will smell it all — and then fire the odorous offender.

UK National Health Service

In 2014, the UK National Health Service banned employees from drinking hot tea or coffee in hospital public spaces — NHS officials stated it made staff "look like slackers." Currently, the rule remains, though it likely won’t stop companies from supplying free coffee to the NHS’ pandemic first responders.
